Before You Begin

Connection methods vary depending on your phone OS and the app you use. Refer to the corresponding section below to connect your device correctly.

Before you begin, make sure your phone, network, and any other required devices meet the requirements listed in this section.

  • Keep the device and phone within close range of each other during setup.

  • The NFC Antenna location varies by phone manufacturer and model. If the device isn't recognized, try moving the top or center of your phone near the NFC label.

System Requirements

To connect and use your device, your phone must run a compatible operating system (OS) version and meet the following requirements.

  • iOS/iPadOS: To use Matter-certified accessories, an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.5 or later is recommended (minimum requirement: iOS 16.1).

  • Android: To use Matter-certified accessories, a phone running Android 13.0 or later is recommended (minimum requirement: Android 8.1 with Google Play Services v22.48.14 or later).

  • Operating System: For a stable experience, use a phone running iOS 15.0 or later or Android 10.0 or later.

  • Wi-Fi Network: Your device supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac).

    • Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption for a secure connection.

    • Captive portal networks (commonly used in hotels, cafes, or airports that require a web-based login) aren't supported.

  • Bluetooth: Turn on Bluetooth on your phone before connecting.

Using a Home Hub

A home hub isn't required, but adding a compatible home hub (such as a HomePod or Apple TV 4K running tvOS 16.1 or later) lets your device act as part of your smart home, enabling remote control and automations by securely connecting your devices to the network.

Features of Using a Hub

  • Remote Access: Control your device and check its status from anywhere in the app.

  • Real-time Notifications: Receive instant alerts on your phone when the device is operated or an event occurs.

  • Automations: Connecting multiple IoT devices allows you to create customized scenes and routines tailored to specific situations or times of day (for example, turning on the lights when you arrive home).

  • The hub must remain powered on and connected to a stable Wi-Fi network at all times.

  • For the best connection, keep a clear line of sight between the device and your always-on hub.
